Uber Can't Nix Location-Detecting Patents Under Alice

Law360, San Francisco (March 7, 2017, 5:48 PM EST) -- A California federal judge on Monday rejected Uber Technologies Inc.’s bid to toss phone application developer X One Inc.’s suit accusing it of infringing its location-detecting patents, finding that the asserted claims are patent-eligible under the U.S. Supreme Court’s Alice ruling.

U.S. District Court Judge Lucy Koh ruled that X One’s patents describe an innovative way of sharing location information between cell phones by allowing users to temporarily share position data with a dynamic “buddy list” that allows users to “change things on the fly.”...
